Tidewater's most remote peninsula, the Northern Neck, was not the most isolated. The colonial history of the Northern Neck is spotted with the names of the great families of Virginia, especially the Carters, the Lees, and the Washingtons. Life on the Northern Neck in colonial times was not easy, and since trend-setting Williamsburg was far away, cultural life was limited. The water produced finfish and shellfish and the land produced food and crops for trade. Today, the Northern Neck continues to retain its quiet and peaceful lifesytle where the seafood industry and farming are still a way of life. The Northern Neck consists of four counties located at the end of the northernmost peninsula on the Chesapeake Bay. Those counties are Northumberland, Lancaster, Richmond and Westmoreland.
