The dictionary defines Tidewater as the coastal area whose streams are affected by the rise and fall of ocean and bay tides and whose water, consequently, is brackish. For Virginians, Tidewater is always spelled with a capital T, and most often refers to the historical definition of Tidewater. The historical Tidewater Virginia extends beyond the limit of tidal action, generally to the fall line of the rivers. The great plantations grew along riverbanks near the coast and developed into a close-knit society based on trade and a European orientation. The area is loaded with place names taken directly from the mother country of England--Surry, York, Isle of Wight, Hampton--or names honoring royalty of the colonial period. Tidewater has a distinct life-style, dictated in part by nature and in part by its precedence as the first area to be settled. The area is naturally water-oriented, as it has been throughout its existence. Good seafood is more than a tradition: it is a must. The seafood industry is important in the commercial life of Tidewater Virginia, and every cove has docks, where commercial and pleasure boats intermingle. The Tidewater land-mass is divided by the Chesapeake Bay and four great rivers (the James, York. Rappahannock, and Potomac) into a series of peninsulas and enclaves. Between the James and the York rivers is the Virginia Peninsula. The Middle Peninsula lies between the York and the Rappahannock rivers, and the Northern Neck stands between the Rappahannock and the Potomac rivers. Hampton Roads, the body of water between the entrance to Chesapeake Bay and the mouth of the James River is one of the world's greatest natural harbors. Since intercourse across wide waters was difficult, each peninsula developed in its own way, but the divisions of Tidewater did not prevent the development of certain unifying characteristics. The region as a whole shares its unique history and has maintained extraordinary fondness for the mother country. Like it or not, Tidewater has embraced conformity, including the Anglican influence, more than have other regions of the state. Graciousness and hospitality still are important qualities. |
