North of the James lies the Virginia Peninsula. The cities of Hampton, Newport News, and Poquoson, and the counties of York, James City, Charles City, and New Kent make up the southernmost of the peninsulas that help to define Virginia's inner coastline. Not counting the Historic Triangle (Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown), which is covered on another page, this area is chocked-full of history. The city of Hampton has a long association with the sea, and is one of the major seafood centers in Virginia. Hampton has a long history, as well, and was first settled as an outpost of Jamestown. Hampton has continued to hold a place in history. NASA's space program at its Langley Laboratory played an important part in America's early space exploration. Newport News has a long history of military involvement, and is world-known for the naval, passenger, and commercial ships built there.
