Southwest Virginia is coalfield country, and it's tough reputation is well know even to many who have never been there. however, the Southwest has a gentler side, too, as evidenced by the mountain folks' own culture, romance and mystery. Vast sections of the Great Southwest are still dedicated to wilderness, some of which is designated as public land, such as the Jefferson National Park and Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. |
